Gum Problems

Periodontal disease, or gum problems, is a major cause of tooth loss in Australia, with around 80% of adults experiencing some form of gum disease over their lifetime. Some people are much more at risk of developing periodontal disease, due to smoking, diabetes, stress, pregnancy, or some medications. Fortunately, most of the time periodontal disease is preventable.

Periodontal disease
is caused by bacteria which form plaque, a sticky, colourless film that builds up on your teeth, particularly around the gum line. Other bacteria can live in the ‘pocket’ or gap between your gum and tooth. Left untreated, these bacteria can cause gum disease and permanent damage to the supporting tissues of your mouth. Dr Alam will therefore aim to stop the progression of gum disease by controlling these bacteria.

To eliminate gum disease-causing bacteria, treatment usually includes scrupulous at-home oral care; professional cleaning of the teeth above and below the gum line to remove plaque and calculus; a program of regular examinations; and eliminating risk factors such as smoking.

In most cases, we can arrest the progression of gum disease with this treatment. However, because gum disease becomes less predictable and more difficult to treat as it advances, we strongly recommend early diagnosis and treatment. For this reason it’s a good idea to attend regular dental examinations at Painfree Dentistry. So why not schedule a checkup with us today by calling on (02) 9635 5166. Our well designed practice is located at 77 Marion St Harris Park NSW 2150.
