Could I benefit from preventive dentistry?

Yes! If you have any of your natural teeth remaining, you’ll benefit from preventive dentistry – and even if you don’t, the Painfree Dentistry team can diagnose dangerous conditions such as mouth cancer or denture stomatitis at your six-monthly appointments.

Will smoking and drinking affect my teeth and gums?

Absolutely – smoking can cause tooth staining, tooth loss, an increased risk of gum disease, and even mouth cancer. 

Smokers tend to need more regular visits to their dentist or hygienist, but our best advice is to try to quit altogether. Drinking alcohol can also cause mouth cancer, and because some alcoholic drinks contain a lot of sugar, can cause tooth decay if consumed too often.

What oral care products do you recommend?

We recommend you consider using an electric toothbrush, as clinical trials show they can remove plaque better than manual toothbrushes. Look for a soft bristled toothbrush with a small- to medium-sized head.

Choose a specialised toothpaste, such as a “total care” toothpaste, or one made specially to help with plaque and gum disease, sensitive teeth and whitening. An alcohol-free mouthwash can also help reduce the formation of plaque.

What preventive techniques can I use at home?

A good oral hygiene routine at home is vital when keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Remember to:

 
  • Brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste, for two minutes.
  • Carefully floss in between your teeth every day, because brushing alone will only account for around 60 percent of your teeth’s surface.
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash to help freshen your breath, and prevent gum disease and tooth decay.
  • Use a straw when drinking soft drinks to reduce exposure to acid.
  • Chew sugar-free gum after eating to stimulate saliva production and help prevent dental decay.
  • Visit the Painfree Dentistry team every six months for a professional clean and inspection.
