Grafting & Augmentation
For Dentists to successfully install dental implants, the jaw needs to have enough bone. This is because implants need the bone for support and stability. In some cases, there isn’t enough jawbone for the implant. There are different reasons for this the most common being tooth loss. With grafting dental treatment, the bone can be fixed to allow beautiful new tooth implants to be put in place.
What is bone grafting and augmentation?
Bone grafting is required when there is not enough jawbone to secure a dental implant. This can be caused by missing teeth or tooth infections. If this is the case your dentist will recommend a bone graft. A bone graft or augmentation involves taking bone from your body or using artificial material to build up the jaw bone. The idea is that the new bone will fuse to your jaw bone and cause the bone to grow and regenerate. Then the new jaw can support the new implant. The implant is usually placed months later.
Where is the bone taken from?
For the bone graft procedure bone can be taken from the body or synthetic materials can be used. If your own bone is chosen for the graft it can be taken from a couple of places. More than likely the bone will be taken from your chin or from the back part of your lower jaw (ramus). If there is not enough bone in these areas your dentist will take the bone from your hip or shin. The hip is a good place to take bone from because it is a bigger area. The downside is it will require a hospital visit.
For some patients, a real bone graft isn’t the best option. In this case, there are other solutions. Dentists can use synthetic materials. This procedure stimulates the body cells in that area to grow new bone without the graft. You can discuss your options with your dentist.
Bone Grafts for Single Teeth
For a single tooth, bone may be taken from a small area like the chin. Your dentist will check how much bone is needed for the implant site. If the chin is used, an incision will be made below the lower teeth. Then the right amount of bone will be removed. The space left in the chin can be filled with bone graft material. After that the new bone will be secured to the implant site, then a protective membrane may be placed over the top. Once the procedure is complete, it will take around six to nine months to heal.
Bone Grafting for Multiple Teeth
For multiple teeth, the procedure is similar. The bone will be taken from a larger area such as the hip or shin. If the hip is the chosen location it will require a hospital stay of one of two nights. If the shin is chosen it can sometimes be done at the dentist’s office. After the bone is taken, the same procedure can begin.
Bone grafts are usually very successful. There are some cases documented where the graft has failed. In many cases risk factors have arose for failure and these are smoking or certain health conditions. You can discuss any concerns with your dentist.
After the procedure, you will be given antibiotics, pain medication and antibacterial mouth wash. The dentists will advise you about foods to avoid and will explain how to avoid putting pressure on the area while it heals. So, follow your dentist’s advice and your graft should be a success.

It’s important to replace missing teeth for reasons other than your smile appearance. When you have missing teeth, your adjacent and opposing teeth can move out of alignment, this can cause a disruption to your bite pattern and impact on your overall oral and general health.
Dental implants are the ideal tooth replacement solution. They look, feel and function as normal teeth allowing you to talk comfortably, eat all your favourite foods and eliminate gum pain, which is experienced by many people who wear dentures.
