Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)

Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ, is a condition which can affect your temporomandibular joint (where your jaw meets the skull), the jaw muscles, or the nerves on the sides of your head. Causing pain and discomfort in your jaw, face, head or neck, TMJ disorders can be very severe, can be either intermittent or constant, and may last for many years. Headaches or migraines can also be caused by TMJ.

The root cause of your TMJ may be jaw damage, a bad bite, grinding or clenching of your teeth, or stress. Using computer diagnostics, the Painfree Dentistry team will carry out a full analysis of the area, including your TM joints, head, neck and facial muscles.

Armed with this information, we can then prescribe a personalised treatment to correct your condition, such as a custom-made bite splint, or adjustment of your teeth and bite so they fit together correctly.

Advantages

Treatment for TMJ can help relieve numerous different symptoms caused by this condition, not only those directly affecting your teeth and jaws. Painfree Dentistry Paramatta will always take a conservative approach to treating this disorder, as our computer diagnostics help accurately pinpoint the problem. The most common procedures used are non-invasive, and it is rare for surgery to be required. Adjusting the occlusal or biting surfaces of teeth can often be enough to relieve pressure on the jaw joints.

Disadvantages

Some people may find it awkward to get used to wearing a bite splint, and conservative treatments will not always be successful. Sometimes more extensive treatment might be necessary to reshape the biting surfaces of teeth, for example through placing dental crowns.
