What is a filling?

A dental filling is a treatment where material is inserted into a decayed or damaged tooth to restore its original shape and function. This can be in the form of a dental inlay (fills centre of tooth) or an onlay (which is more extensive and covers the entire surface of a tooth).

Types of fillings

  • Amalgam: amalgam is a mixture of different the silver, copper, tin, mercury and zinc metals making it a very strong filling material.
  • Composite resin: resin resembles a white, tooth-coloured material. While it is a bit more expensive than amalgam, it looks more natural.
  • Glass-ionomer cement: glass-ionomer cement is also tooth-coloured, however not as durable as composite resin.
  • Gold & Porcelain: these materials tend to be the most durable over the long-term. Porcelain fillings can be matched to your tooth colour, but gold is gold.

Process of getting filling

A dental filling treatment in Parramatta will usually last between 30 minutes to an hour to complete all the work. Our dentist will prepare the area with a numbing spray before the local anaesthetic is used. Once the area is completely numb, the dentist will remove any decay with a drill and seal the area with a filling. Our dentists will check to make sure the bite feels normal. You should experience minimal pain and the treatment is straightforward.

How much does a tooth filling cost?

Tooth-coloured fillings like porcelain or composite can cost anywhere between $150 to $450, depending on your claimable amount from your private health fund.
