If you’ve been living with missing teeth or the effects of gum disease, your jawbone may have deteriorated to the point where we may find it difficult or impossible to place dental implants. In this case, a sinus lift can help add sufficient bone between your jaw and the maxillary sinuses on either side of your nose to allow for dental implants.

To make room for this new bone, which usually comes from areas such as your hip or tibia, the sinus membrane is “lifted” upward in a surgical procedure. The gum tissue where your back teeth used to be is cut open, and the tissue is raised, exposing the bone. Your surgeon then opens a small window in the bone, gently creating space by moving the membrane lining the sinus up and away from your jaw. Bone graft material is then packed into this space, and your tissue is closed with stitches.

After around four to nine months, the grafted material will have securely bonded to your jawbone. The Painfree Dentistry team can then place your dental implants, and you can enjoy a complete, attractive smile once again.

Benefits of the Sinus Lift Procedure

A sinus lift procedure at Painfree Dentistry can create the optimal conditions for upper jaw dental implants and restore proper bone structure. This specialised treatment offers several important benefits:
Provide Sufficient Bone Density
A sinus lift increases the amount of bone in the upper jaw by carefully lifting the sinus membrane and adding bone material under it. This additional bone volume creates the necessary foundation, ensuring a strong base to support upper-arch dental implants.
Improve Dental Implant Stability
By creating more bone height in the upper jaw, a sinus lift enhances dental implants' stability and success rates. This additional support ensures that your implants have the strong, secure foundation they need for proper integration and long-term durability.
Enhance Aesthetic Results
A sinus lift helps maintain proper facial proportions and smile aesthetics by building up and restoring the natural bone structure of the upper jaw. The procedure supports the function and appearance of dental restorations, creating more natural-looking results.

Advantages of a Sinus Lift

A sinus lift can enable patients to benefit from dental implants. Surgery is relatively straightforward, and most people will experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. Increasing the amount of available bone can significantly increase the chances of implant success, a treatment that can last for many years or even for life.

Disadvantages

Some people find the thought of surgery daunting, and the donor bone graft site can be sore for some time afterwards. Painfree Dentistry can help ensure treatment is as comfortable as possible, as we do offer a range of different sedation dentistry options, including intravenous sedation. A sinus lift does mean dental implant procedures take longer to complete, extending the overall time required by several months.
