Why Would You Need a Dental Implant?
A dental implant can be put into place if you have a missing tooth. It can be placed in between your natural teeth. So, you can have a complete and natural-looking smile. A single tooth replacement is the treatment option for the following issues:
- A loose tooth
- A missing tooth
- Broken or cracked teeth
- A tooth with failed previous treatment like a root canal
- A tooth that is in poor condition and cannot be saved from problems like tooth decay
- An injured tooth from an accident or sporting injury
- Issues with baby teeth
- For emergency cases for patients needing a quick tooth replacement
Tooth Implant Procedure
To replace a missing tooth, an artificial titanium root will be inserted into the jawbone. This will hold the tooth in place. Then the osseointegration process begins where the titanium and jawbone fuse together. Osseointegration keeps the tooth implant anchored permanently in place.
The time the treatment takes to complete is different for each patient. For most patients, their case will be simple. A scan will show that there is enough good quality bone to hold the implant in place. If this is the case, the whole procedure from start to finish will take around three or four appointments over three to five months.
There are cases where an extraction may be needed first. This adds an extra two to four months of healing time before the new tooth implant is placed. In some cases, the implant can be placed at the same time of extraction. This is called the same day implant. Treatment like this can only go ahead if you have enough good bone. If this is available to you, your dentist will discuss it with you. The cost of treatment depends on many factors, including dental implant quality and more.
There are alternative treatments available for a single tooth replacement, and those are a denture or a bridge. Both these solutions are not as expensive as an implant but are also considered less effective and convenient. However, these are the best option for some of our patients.
A denture is a temporary replacement. It is not permanent like an implant and must be removed when sleeping and eating. Dentures are generally made from plastic which means they don’t look as natural on close inspection. The benefits of a denture are cost and the fact that this is a quick fix for a missing tooth.
Bridges are more natural-looking than a denture. However, in comparison are not as natural looking as an implant. The negative side to a bridge is that it involves work on healthy teeth. The teeth in the surrounding area must be ground down to support the bridge. On a positive note, a bridge is natural-looking unless closely inspected and costs less than an implant.
