Whether we mean to, we all notice people’s smiles, especially when they have brilliantly white teeth. In our social media age, most people want whiter teeth but may be unsure what works.

With so many dubious options available, the Painfree Dentistry team in Parramatta may help you understand the advantages of professional teeth whitening and how to protect your whitening results through four tips for aftercare.

How Professional Teeth Whitening Works

Teeth discolourations generally come in two types: surface and internal, also called extrinsic and intrinsic, respectively. Teeth whitening is effective only for extrinsic stains, so you’ll want a dental exam to determine if whitening will even work. If we decide you are a candidate, you’re more likely to see excellent results.

Our teeth whitening process employs compounds and techniques at a strength only available to dentists. This enhances your results, but for a time after teeth whitening, your tooth surfaces may be slightly sensitive. They also are more susceptible to specific threats, which is why we offer these four tips.

Tip 1 – Take a Smoke Break

Tobacco smoke contains some of the most staining compounds for your teeth. The two culprits are nicotine and tar, and since they are particulates in smoke, they get into the tiny pores in tooth enamel. It’s a one-two punch. The nicotine reacts with oxygen, leaving yellow stains combined with the brown discolouration from tar.

In the days immediately after your teeth whitening treatment, your tooth surfaces are more susceptible the nicotine and tar, so we strongly advise you to take a break from using tobacco in any form for at least a week, but we recommend taking a forever break!

Tip 2 – Avoid Staining Liquids for Several Days

Like tobacco, dark-coloured drinks like coffee, cola, and red wine may penetrate your enamel more quickly after a teeth whitening treatment. Therefore, avoiding these and more acidic beverages for several days would be best to protect your whitening results.

An added tip for those who wish to enjoy these drinks is to use a straw. Drinking through a straw minimizes the contact with your tooth surfaces so that less staining can occur.

Tip 3 – Drink More Water, especially between those Staining Drinks

Like using a straw, drinking clear water helps prevent staining by flushing those compounds away from your teeth.

Tip 4 – Take Special Care with Your Brushing and Flossing Routine

The best long-term way to enhance your professional teeth whitening results is to have a top-notch home-care routine. Consider even carrying a toothbrush and toothpaste so that, in addition to drinking water after drinking coffee or red wine, you can also brush your teeth to remove that which causes the most stubborn stains.
