Children's Dentistry

children's dentistry parramatta | family smilingDental fluorosis (also termed mottled enamel) is a pervasive disorder characterised by hypomineralization of tooth enamel caused by ingestion of excessive fluoride during enamel formation.

What Is Dental Fluorosis?

Fluorosis is a sign that shows your children have been over-exposed to fluoride while their teeth have been developing. Affecting the appearance of your child’s teeth, dental fluorosis causes faint white lines or streaks on their tooth enamel.

Once your child’s teeth have broken through their gums, they can no longer develop dental fluorosis.

Though fluoride is a beneficial element to your child’s oral health, an oversupply can interfere with the cells that make tooth enamel while your child’s teeth are developing in their gums. Dental fluorosis does not affect the function or health of your child’s teeth and is often so faint that only your dentist will notice the condition during an examination.

Will Dental Fluorosis Harm My Child?

Remember that fluorosis affects only the appearance of teeth. It does not result in cavities. As a result, most of the treatment for fluorosis consists of masking the stain.

Many cases of fluorosis are minor enough not to need treatment. Sometimes fluorosis occurs only on the back teeth, where it can’t be seen. More serious cases and cases involving the front teeth can be treated by removing the surface-stained areas through tooth whitening or other procedures. Severe cases of fluorosis can be covered with bonding, crowns or veneers.

Many children at our Parramatta dental clinic have perfectly healthy smiles, but many others are prone tochildren's dentistry parramatta | girl with toothbrush certain dental issues. Here are some of the most common dental problems we see in children at Painfree Dentistry.

Tooth Decay

Most children aren’t great at brushing and flossing their teeth. This, coupled with some kids having a high-sugar diet, can cause sticky plaque to accumulate on the surface of the teeth which eventually wears down the tooth.

Tooth Sensitivity

Sensitive teeth can be uncomfortable and disrupt your child during the day. These can be caused by several factors such as teeth grinding, acid erosion and orthodontic treatment.

Dental Emergencies

Kids playing sports, roughhousing with friends or falling when riding a bike are scenarios where a dental accident can occur. This may involve teeth breaking and chipping.

Gum Disease

Children may experience gingivitis prior to gum disease, which involves swollen, red gums and bleeding when your child brushes. This can develop into gum disease if not treated properly, which causes gum recession and pain in the mouth.

Orthodontic Issues

Children are rarely born with perfectly straight teeth. Misaligned issues that are common in children include an overbite, under bite, open bite and spacing problems. Luckily, orthodontic treatments exist which can prevent these issues.
